Just in Time

As we’ve seen over the past few months, motion cameras have been involved on magazine covers. To date Esquire (photographer Greg Williams), W (photographer Steven Klein) and Time magazines have published images created with the RED camera. Esquire UK (April 2009) was the first to publish a cover image shot with the RED of Megan Fox, and this past December Time published the year ending cover shot with the RED (photographer Finlay MacKay).

While many shooters are hedging their bets, and shooting their covers with a Canon or a medium format digital back, others are breaking new ground and shooting their covers with the RED. RED when shot properly, will produce amazing images, and at 24 frames per second, you have so much content to chose from.

In a future installment, I will reveal some amazing RED still captures, and show prints over 16X20 that rival digital still, stay tuned.

  1. It’s certainly an exciting time in this regard.

I think the covers we’ve seen so far have been lacking in technical quality (detail, tonal transitions, etc…). This will certainly be resolved with the next few generations of cameras for sure.

Some other problems remain however, such as the slow shutter speed when grabbing still from video footage. I wondered about some of these issues at more length here:

For now I think you have to sacrifice quality of one or the other to get both stills and motion from the same capture. Looking forward to the new reds.

Nice blog here! Just recently found it, but will check back regularly.

While many another look to have omitted the fundamental thought of most of it, what you submitted prefatory is clear-eyed and alsodead on the money. I am not sounding out that I agree along every one of the details; nevertheless, I must say you did given me reason to take some time to think several of the concepts that I reckoned that I possessed as solid notions in that attentivenesses. expressed, and now for someone like myself to consider a little more along some of your most important concepts. All together I would state you’ve did a job well done..”

  4. I was scanning something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your linear perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read originally. I am still reflecting over the different points of view, but I’m leaning heavily toward yours. And no matter, that’s what is so superb about modern democracy and the marketplace of thoughts on-line.

  5. Great discussion. And I REALLY like that you practice what you preach. That
